What will your value word be?
How will you begin 2021?
Instead of writing New Year’s resolutions at the end of the year that are almost surely forgotten and never actioned, I decided to choose a value word to focus on for the entire year. This new process was inspired by a training program I attended in November 2019. The program, hosted by American Management Association and facilitated by Ann Evanston was one of the best certification programs I have ever attended.
During the program, Ann shared her story of switching from resolutions to value words. Ann also shared this is a process she and her significant other action on the last day of each year. Focusing on just ONE value word for the entire year makes complete sense to me. And what a great way to celebrate on New Year’s Eve.
I pondered several words to help me stay focused in 2021. A few options that came to mind were Confidence, Perseverance, Tenacity, Kindness, Gravitas and a couple others. Ultimately I chose Commitment. I’ll explain why in just a moment.
The first value word I chose was in 2019. I chose Gratitude because I did not feel like I had a good understanding of the word and how to incorporate it into my every day business life. For me, the value word I choose must be a word I am able to focus on in a professional setting. I practiced Gratitude all year and now I am able to easily incorporate Gratitude into any business situation. However, it takes practice.

My value word for 2020 was authenticity. For many years as a female business owner I would choose contracts to pay the bills. There were times when I was not leading with my authentic self. The entire year of 2020 was focused on being an authentic business leader, CEO and Founder of Everything Webinar.
When I finally allowed the authentic me to show her face to the world, flaws and all, amazing things happened. I was asked to become a mentor for several business organizations. I gave more presentations to individual groups more times in 2020 than in my entire life. I finally figured out my leadership style and I accept the fact that I will never please everyone. However, I lead with my authentic style and make decisions based upon humility as well as business savvy.
Personally, I like to find objects that are tangible that contain my chosen value word. I feel like I need to see the word every single day in order to focus on learning to incorporate the concept into everyday life. I try to find inspirational objects of art to display in my work space. I also love posting the word with a photo on social media for all of the world to see. Now that is Commitment!
One of the best ways for me to remind myself of my value word is to incorporate it into my email signature. I send email messages every day so I have a regular reminder of where I need to focus.
