How to Rock Your Presentations
Recently I had the sheer pleasure of working with Luanne Stevenson from Human Side Consulting based in San Francisco, CA. We were chosen to facilitate two simultaneous training programs called “Presenting with Impact” in beautiful San Diego, CA. You can find this program here (training content owned by American Management Association). Luanne and I both have more than 20 years experience as trainers. However, we are both constantly humbled by the Adult Learners who attend our programs.
I began my program with a standard welcome and greeting to set expectations for the day. I then guided the group directly to the next part of the curriculum; to practice giving one minute introductions about themselves. Although I was training high level managers for a large global corporation the nerves throughout the group were palpable.
I was reminded that day how most people fear public speaking.. Here is an interesting post from Wikipedia . Most people fear public speaking more than death as I mentioned in a recent Tweet
Practice, Practice and Practice!
As we rounded out the day toward an afternoon filled with presentation design skills, body language and use of our voice, I was approached by one of the participants. She specifically asked “how are you able to engage so easily with all of these people you have never met and make us feel like we have known you forever?” I gave her the simplest answer: PRACTICE!
There are other answers as well:
- Know your audience
- Know your material
- Know your technology set up
- Practice de-escalation techniques to reduce anxiety
- Be sure your presentation is appropriately structured for your environment (virtual or in-person)
Regarding Number 5 there is a very simple structure you can follow for your next virtual presentation. You can download the free template here. We are launching a full training program this month to accompany the Virtual Presentation Design Template.
We can help meet your presentation needs this year. Let’s make 2019 the year you ROCK your presentations.
Design well, speak well, present well!!
