Lose the Uuummmmms – Gain an audience

Using Un-Words is KILLING your audience engagement rates

It is time to lose the Uuummmmmms and gain an audience

Hello, Um, my name is, Um, Kimberli. And I am, Um, here today to share with you some, Um, valuable, Um, information with you. 🤦‍♀️

Yes, I am speaking directly to you. The title of this post caught your attention for a reason. Either you know you need help minimizing the un-words or you know someone who does. My guess is that you know you need help but have no idea who to reach out to for expert advice.

How many times per day do you think you use un-words? You would probably be shocked to know approximately 90% of the 8,500 people I have coached around the globe in the last 20 years use a ridiculous number of words that are absolutely not necessary.

Here is an interesting fact: The average human speaks anywhere between 100 and 130 words per minute. If more than 22% or more of your presentation contains words that aren’t even related to your presentation, how well do you think your message is being received? Rhetorical question, obviously.

Most people do not think in terms of engagement rates when giving a presentation because most of us are so nervous about the delivery. We are so nervous about the delivery and so focused on our own anxiety, we fail to remember our main goal is to meet the needs of the audience. All too often our audience leaves the presentation or meeting either in Zombie mode or with heavy brain fog. Either way, we are barely able to remember the name of the presenter, let alone the title and subject matter. I hear this complaint EVERY single day.

gain an audience

Let’s imagine you are a person who speaks 100 words per minute. If I were to give you one minute to tell your story and half of the words you speak are “Un-Words” your story becomes quite convoluted. You and I need to start having conversations about how to scrub the “Un-Words” from your talk tracks.

Fortunately, I know EXACTLY how to help you in 3 easy ways:

1. Attend the World’s FIRST Un-Word Clinic on April 20, 2021, 09:00 AM Pacific Time via Zoom (absolutely free)
